Tianjin is a major metropolis in northern China and one of the country’s five national central cities. Located next to Beijing, Tianjin is the largest port city in northern China. In the 19th century it was occupied by several Western powers, which left a legacy of European-style architecture, especially in the Five Great Avenues and the Italian Style Street. Today, many international cruise ships dock at Tianjin Xin’gang Port, adding to the city’s international character. With its blend of Chinese and Western influences and its mix of historical and modern elements, Tianjin offers a distinctive urban experience. Although it is not as famous as other Chinese tourist destinations, it features several noteworthy sites, many of them historic, such as the Dabei Buddhist Temple, Huangyaguan Pass, and the Old City of Tianjin. One of Tianjin’s most unique attractions is the Porcelain House (also known as China House), a remarkable museum building decorated with about 4,000 pieces of ancient porcelain, 400 jade carvings, 20 tons of crystal and agate, and over a million fragments of antique Chinese ceramics. The Dabei Buddhist Monastery is another must-see landmark that reflects the city’s deep religious and cultural traditions.
